X-Trail T32 inspection checklist

Look for: A December 2014 recall covered early T32 X-Trails where the fuel pressure sensor could be insufficiently tightened to the fuel rail and loosen with heat/vibration, allowing a fuel leak that, near an ignition source, could cause a fire.

Look for: A commonly reported T32 defect alongside the CVT - air-con can lose cooling performance or fail, often surfacing around the time the warranty lapses.

Look for: The Jatco-built Xtronic CVT is the headline issue: owners report whining, shuddering on acceleration as the steel push-belt slips, judder and outright failure, frequently around 70,000-150,000km and often just after the 5-year warranty expires. North American Rogue owners won a class action and got extended cover; Australian buyers did not.

Look for: Worked hard - towing near the limit, fully loaded, long climbs - the CVT can heat-soak and pull back power to protect itself.

Look for: The DPF needs sustained higher-rpm running (20-30 min above ~2500rpm) to regenerate. Used as a school-run/urban family car it never completes a regen, clogs, triggers limp mode, and a blocked DPF can raise backpressure that damages the turbo and sensors - turning a clean into a multi-thousand-dollar repair.

Look for: The R9M's timing chain is designed for long life but documented cases show premature stretch around 140,000-150,000km, with rattle (especially on cold start), rough idle and power loss; left unattended it can skip or fail.

Look for: The 1.6 dCi turbo is a documented weak point, with failures sometimes before 100,000km, often linked to oil-feed/DPF backpressure issues.

Look for: The R9M runs two EGR valves that accumulate carbon, particularly with urban driving, causing rough idle, hesitation, power loss and an engine warning light.

Look for: As a direct-injection engine with no port fuel washing the valves, the MR20DD can accumulate carbon on the intake valves, causing rough idle and minor power loss over time.
