Overview

The T32 dropped the boxy T31's tough-ute looks for a softened, car-like monocoque crossover aimed squarely at families, sold as ST, ST-L, TS, Ti and TL with the option of a third row (7-seat) on FWD models. It is a soft-roader, not a 4WD: the All Mode 4x4-i system is an on-demand auto/lock AWD with NO low range, fine for wet grass, gravel and snow but not for serious off-road work. Australia got three engines - a 2.0L MR20DD petrol (base ST manual only), the volume-selling 2.5L QR25DE petrol paired exclusively with Nissan's Xtronic CVT, and a 1.6L R9M dCi turbo-diesel (2014 to roughly 2019). The defining ownership risk is the Xtronic CVT, which can whine, shudder and fail - often just as the warranty lapses - with replacement costs that can write off an older example; North American Rogue owners won an extended-warranty class action over it but Australian buyers got no such cover. The diesel adds DPF, EGR and timing-chain concerns of its own. Buy on transmission/engine history and service records, not on looks.

Pros

  • Smooth, proven QR25DE engine with huge parts support
  • The volume seller - easy to find, cheap to buy
  • Adequate performance and reasonable economy for a family SUV
  • FWD or AWD, 5- or 7-seat flexibility

Cons

  • Xtronic CVT is the big reliability question mark
  • Droning CVT under hard acceleration, can feel strained when loaded
  • Some oil consumption on higher-km QR25 engines
  • No low range - capability is limited to light off-road

Known problems

high
Xtronic CVT failure / shudder / whine
The Jatco-built Xtronic CVT is the headline issue: owners report whining, shuddering on acceleration as the steel push-belt slips, judder and outright failure, frequently around 70,000-150,000km and often just after the 5-year warranty expires. North American Rogue owners won a class action and got extended cover; Australian buyers did not.
Fix: Insist on full CVT service history; service the fluid early and often (well under Nissan's long intervals); on failure, recondition or replace. Test-drive for whine/shudder before buying.

medium
CVT overheating / limp mode when towing or loaded
Worked hard - towing near the limit, fully loaded, long climbs - the CVT can heat-soak and pull back power to protect itself.
Fix: Stay well within tow rating, fit a CVT cooler if towing regularly, keep fluid fresh; avoid sustained heavy work.
From Any · ~$200-1500
low
Oil consumption on higher-km QR25
Like many QR25 engines, some examples use oil between services at higher mileage.
Fix: Check oil regularly, watch for blue smoke; PCV and ring wear are the usual culprits.

Pros

  • Avoids the Xtronic CVT entirely - manual only
  • Cheapest way into a T32, simple drivetrain
  • Decent economy, chain-driven timing
  • No DPF or diesel emissions complexity

Cons

  • Genuinely underpowered for the body, slow when loaded
  • Base ST FWD manual only - no AWD, no 7-seat in this spec
  • Direct-injection intake carbon build-up over time
  • Rare and basic - few were sold

Known problems

medium
Direct-injection intake carbon build-up
As a direct-injection engine with no port fuel washing the valves, the MR20DD can accumulate carbon on the intake valves, causing rough idle and minor power loss over time.
Fix: Walnut-blast intake valve clean as needed; quality fuel and occasional highway runs help.
From 100k+ km · ~$300-800
low
Underpowered when loaded
106kW/200Nm in a ~1.5t SUV is leisurely; fully loaded or on hills it feels strained. Not a fault, a characteristic.
Fix: Accept the modest performance or step up to the 2.5 CVT / diesel.

Xtronic CVT, 6MT
Timing chain / belt / gear
Chain-driven (designed long-life, but premature stretch documented)

Pros

  • Excellent real-world economy and strong low-down torque
  • Best engine for towing and long-distance touring of the three
  • AWD manual avoids the CVT entirely
  • Relaxed, frugal highway cruiser

Cons

  • DPF clogs on short urban trips - the classic family-SUV diesel trap
  • Renault-Nissan R9M has documented turbo and timing-chain concerns
  • Twin EGR valves carbon up
  • FWD diesel still uses the questionable Xtronic CVT; withdrawn from sale ~2019

Known problems

high
DPF clogging / limp mode (urban use)
The DPF needs sustained higher-rpm running (20-30 min above ~2500rpm) to regenerate. Used as a school-run/urban family car it never completes a regen, clogs, triggers limp mode, and a blocked DPF can raise backpressure that damages the turbo and sensors - turning a clean into a multi-thousand-dollar repair.
Fix: Confirm DPF health and regen history; do regular highway runs; forced regen or clean early; avoid diesel if mostly short urban trips.
From Any (worse with short trips) · ~$800-3500
high
Timing chain stretch (R9M)
The R9M's timing chain is designed for long life but documented cases show premature stretch around 140,000-150,000km, with rattle (especially on cold start), rough idle and power loss; left unattended it can skip or fail.
Fix: Listen for chain rattle on cold start pre-purchase; replace chain, guides and tensioner if stretched; keep oil changes strict.
From 140k-150k+ km · ~$2000-4000
high
Turbo failure
The 1.6 dCi turbo is a documented weak point, with failures sometimes before 100,000km, often linked to oil-feed/DPF backpressure issues.
Fix: Maintain strict oil servicing, keep DPF healthy, address any whistling/boost loss promptly; replace turbo on failure.
From Can be under 100k km · ~$2000-4500
medium
EGR carbon build-up (twin EGR)
The R9M runs two EGR valves that accumulate carbon, particularly with urban driving, causing rough idle, hesitation, power loss and an engine warning light.
Fix: EGR clean or replacement; intake clean; more highway running.
From 80k+ km · ~$300-900

Common problems (all variants)

high
Fuel pressure sensor recall (early build) - fire risk
A December 2014 recall covered early T32 X-Trails where the fuel pressure sensor could be insufficiently tightened to the fuel rail and loosen with heat/vibration, allowing a fuel leak that, near an ignition source, could cause a fire.
Fix: Verify the recall was completed via VIN with Nissan; have any fuel smell investigated immediately.
From Any (specific VINs) · ~Recall (free)
medium
Air conditioning / climate faults
A commonly reported T32 defect alongside the CVT - air-con can lose cooling performance or fail, often surfacing around the time the warranty lapses.
Fix: Diagnose compressor, condenser and gas; re-gas or replace failed components; check condenser for stone damage.
From 70k+ km · ~$300-2000

Tailgate strut paint-coating recall
A May 2016 recall covered tens of thousands of T32 X-Trails (built Jan 2014-Jan 2016) over the paint coating on a tailgate-support strut.
Fix: Confirm recall completion by VIN with Nissan.

Electronic parking brake / warning-light gremlins
Owners report EPB warning lights staying on and various dash warnings, sometimes traced to body-control/electrical faults or sensors rather than an actual brake problem.
Fix: Scan for fault codes; address the specific sensor/actuator or BCM issue; reset after service.
From Any · ~$150-600

Reversing camera / infotainment glitches
Reversing camera dropouts and infotainment/head-unit glitches are reported, often wiring, connector or water-ingress related at the tailgate.
Fix: Check camera wiring/connector and tailgate harness for water ingress; repair or replace the camera/head unit.

Interior trim wear and seat comfort
Cabin plastics and trim can wear, and some owners find the driver's seat less comfortable than the passenger seat on longer drives.
Fix: Cosmetic; seat cushions/aftermarket support help long-distance comfort.
