Jimny JB43 (3rd gen) inspection checklist

1998-2018 · 7 things to check before you buy, taken from this car's known problems.

highRust at chassis, coil and body mounts

Look for: Across the whole JB43 run, rust forms at the chassis-to-body and coil-spring mounting points, boot floor, under the rear seats and behind the side mouldings. Mount rust can be a structural failure, not just cosmetic.

If you find it: Detailed underbody inspection before purchase; repair/reinforce affected mounts. Strongly prefer inland, dry-climate cars over coastal ones.

highDeath wobble (king-pin bearing wear)

Look for: Worn king-pin (steering knuckle) bearings combine with play in the steering and front end to trigger a violent steering-wheel shimmy that hits in the 60-80km/h range, sometimes severe enough to force you to slow down. Water, mud and grit getting into the knuckles wears the bearings prematurely - very common and the defining issue of these cars.

If you find it: Replace or re-shim the king-pin bearings, and refresh tie-rod ends, radius-arm bushes, wheel bearings and the steering damper to remove all play. New Suzuki king pins fix it in one hit but cost more than shimming.

mediumRear / intermediate propshaft wear and unboot-able joints

Look for: The rearmost propshaft is vulnerable, and the short intermediate driveshaft between the divorced transfer case and gearbox has no serviceable boot - Suzuki sells the whole shaft, not just the boot or joint, so a worn UJ or seal means a complete shaft.

If you find it: Grease and inspect UJs regularly; replace the propshaft assembly when joints develop play or vibration.

mediumCV joint / front halfshaft wear

Look for: Front CV joints wear and are easily damaged by engaging 4WD on high-grip sealed surfaces (transmission wind-up). Costs sting because Suzuki sells the CV as a complete CV-plus-halfshaft assembly rather than just the joint.

If you find it: Replace the halfshaft/CV assembly; use 4WD only on loose/slippery surfaces and engage free-wheeling correctly.

1.3L M13A petrol (early, non-VVT)

highChassis and body-mount rust

Look for: Rust attacks the chassis-to-body mounting points, coil-spring mounts, boot floor, area under the rear seats and bodywork behind the side plastic mouldings. Rust in the chassis/coil mounts is a structural concern, not cosmetic.

If you find it: Thorough underbody inspection pre-purchase; favour dry-climate cars. Cut-and-weld repair of mounts where needed - walk away from heavily rotted examples.

1.3L M13A VVT petrol (facelift)

mediumGearbox synchro wear (R72 manual)

Look for: Some mid-to-late manual cars wear the 2nd-gear synchro, giving a baulk/crunch on the 1-2 shift; if ignored it can damage the gear and end in a gearbox rebuild or replacement.

If you find it: Address early - fresh gearbox oil and gentle shifting; rebuild or replace the box if synchros are gone. Check shift quality cold on test drive.

mediumCrank angle sensor failure

Look for: The crank angle / position sensor can fail, causing rough idle, misfires, intermittent stalling or a no-start. A known recurring electrical niggle on the M13A.

If you find it: Replace the crank angle sensor; diagnose with a scan tool to confirm before swapping parts.

lowSuspension and steering wear from off-road use

Look for: Rough-track use wears bushes, shocks, radius-arm and panhard bushes and loosens steering components, adding to vibration and vague steering.

If you find it: Standard live-axle maintenance - refresh bushes, shocks and steering links together; upgraded aftermarket parts are cheap and plentiful.

lowTired age-related consumables

Look for: Most JB43s are now old and many have lived hard off-road lives - expect perished hoses, weeping seals, worn engine/gearbox mounts, tired cooling and aged electrics.

If you find it: Budget for a consumables refresh on purchase and a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

lowHighway range and stability limitations

Look for: Not a fault, but the small tank, short gearing, tall body and light weight make the Jimny tiring and twitchy at highway speeds and in crosswinds - inherent to the design.

If you find it: Accept the character; long-range fuel options and quality tyres/alignment help stability.
