Overview

The JB43 is the long-lived 3rd-generation Jimny, sold in Australia simply as the Jimny (model code SN413) and earlier badged Sierra. It is a genuine ladder-frame, dual-range, live-axle (front and rear) 4WD shrunk into a tiny 3-door wagon weighing barely a tonne - which is exactly why it punches so far above its size off-road and why it has a cult following. Mechanically it is dead simple: one petrol engine across the whole run, the 1.3L M13A four (early non-VVT, then the VVT version from the 2005 facelift), driving a part-time 4WD system selected by dash buttons (2WD / 4H / 4L). The engine itself is genuinely robust and chain-timed; the real ownership story is the chassis - the notorious 'death wobble' steering shimmy from worn king-pin bearings, expensive Suzuki-only CV/halfshaft assemblies, propshaft wear and rust at the chassis-to-body and coil mounts. Buy on condition and service history rather than engine choice, because there is only one engine to choose from. Slow, noisy and cramped on the highway, but charming, cheap to run and seriously capable in the rough.

Pros

Death wobble (king-pin bearing wear)
Worn king-pin (steering knuckle) bearings combine with play in the steering and front end to trigger a violent steering-wheel shimmy that hits in the 60-80km/h range, sometimes severe enough to force you to slow down. Water, mud and grit getting into the knuckles wears the bearings prematurely - very common and the defining issue of these cars.
Fix: Replace or re-shim the king-pin bearings, and refresh tie-rod ends, radius-arm bushes, wheel bearings and the steering damper to remove all play. New Suzuki king pins fix it in one hit but cost more than shimming.

Chassis and body-mount rust
Rust attacks the chassis-to-body mounting points, coil-spring mounts, boot floor, area under the rear seats and bodywork behind the side plastic mouldings. Rust in the chassis/coil mounts is a structural concern, not cosmetic.
Fix: Thorough underbody inspection pre-purchase; favour dry-climate cars. Cut-and-weld repair of mounts where needed - walk away from heavily rotted examples.

CV joint / front halfshaft wear
Front CV joints wear and are easily damaged by engaging 4WD on high-grip sealed surfaces (transmission wind-up). Costs sting because Suzuki sells the CV as a complete CV-plus-halfshaft assembly rather than just the joint.
Fix: Replace the halfshaft/CV assembly; use 4WD only on loose/slippery surfaces and engage free-wheeling correctly.

Pros

  • VVT adds a touch more flexibility and slightly better economy than the early engine
  • Same robust, chain-timed M13A bottom end - rarely develops major faults

Death wobble (king-pin bearing wear)
Same king-pin bearing wear as the earlier car - contamination of the steering knuckles wears the bearings, and combined with general front-end play produces the trademark steering shimmy at 60-80km/h.
Fix: Re-shim or replace king-pin bearings and eliminate play in tie-rod ends, bushes, wheel bearings and steering damper. Inspect for shimmy on test drive before buying.

Gearbox synchro wear (R72 manual)
Some mid-to-late manual cars wear the 2nd-gear synchro, giving a baulk/crunch on the 1-2 shift; if ignored it can damage the gear and end in a gearbox rebuild or replacement.
Fix: Address early - fresh gearbox oil and gentle shifting; rebuild or replace the box if synchros are gone. Check shift quality cold on test drive.

The rearmost propshaft is vulnerable, and the short intermediate driveshaft between the divorced transfer case and gearbox has no serviceable boot - Suzuki sells the whole shaft, not just the boot or joint, so a worn UJ or seal means a complete shaft.
Fix: Grease and inspect UJs regularly; replace the propshaft assembly when joints develop play or vibration.
