Overview

Australia gets only one engine across the whole JB74 run: the 1.5L K15B naturally-aspirated petrol four. The story here is the platform, not the powertrain. The Jimny is a genuine old-school ladder-frame 4WD shrunk to city-car size - part-time dual-range ALLGRIP PRO, live axles front and rear, brilliant off-road for its weight, and a cult following. The trade-offs are equally real: it is slow (roughly 14 seconds to 100km/h), the optional 4-speed torque-converter auto saps what little performance there is and hunts on hills, on-highway it is buzzy, wind-affected and twitchy at speed, and the ladder chassis has no factory cavity rust protection so frame and seam corrosion appears early on coastal/wet cars. The 3-door (built in Japan) was the only body until the longer 5-door XL (built in India) arrived in 2024 with a dual-camera ADAS suite; the 3-door's single-camera AEB fell foul of the March 2025 ADR and was paused. A 2018-2019 fuel-pump recall (swelling impeller, stall risk) is the only major safety campaign. Buy one for what it is - a tiny, charming, capable off-roader - not as an all-rounder.

Pros

Fuel pump impeller swelling (2018-2019 recall)
A manufacturing defect can cause the in-tank fuel-pump impeller to swell, deform and bind, blocking the pump and causing the engine to stall and lose power. Suzuki Australia recalled 2018-2019 cars (recall REC-005927) to replace the pump free of charge.
Fix: Confirm the recall fuel pump was done by VIN with a Suzuki dealer; replace the pump if the work is outstanding.

4-speed auto hunting / overheating on hills and towing
The dated 4-speed torque-converter auto cannot make the most of only 130Nm; on inclines it busily swaps ratios, runs high revs and can heat up, and on-road performance suffers noticeably versus the manual.
Fix: Prefer the 5-speed manual; if auto, fresh ATF servicing and gentle gradient driving. Not a defect, but a buying consideration.

Wheel bearing noise / failure
Front/rear wheel bearings can grow noisy or fail, more commonly on 2020-on cars and strongly correlated with heavy 4WD use - mud and water crossings - and larger/heavier aftermarket tyres.
Fix: Replace the bearing/hub; reseal after water crossings and avoid oversized tyres beyond the diff/bearing's comfort zone.

Ladder-frame and body-seam rust (no factory cavity protection)
The ladder chassis ships with no cavity/wax protection; frame interiors, seams and wheel-arch mounting points behind plastic trim can begin corroding within a few years, especially on coastal, wet or beach-used cars.
Fix: Apply cavity wax/underbody protection early, wash down after beach/mud use, and inspect the chassis and seams closely pre-purchase.
