Overview

Two related but distinct ladder-frame classics sold side by side. The SJ Sierra (SJ410, SJ413, SJ70, SJ80) is the tiny, narrow, light leaf-then-coil sprung 4WD that became a cult off-roader and beach buggy - simple carburetted (then late EFI) 1.0 and 1.3 fours, live axles, dual-range part-time 4WD and free-wheeling hubs. The first-generation Vitara (1988-1998) is the larger, more civilised wagon - still ladder-frame with live axles and dual-range, but coil-sprung, wider and available as a 5-door with a small V6. None of the Australian-delivered cars were diesel (the European 1.9/2.0 turbodiesels were never sold here). These are now appreciating classics rather than tough touring rigs: the engines are basically reliable and easy to work on, but bodies and chassis rust, swivel hubs and birfields wear, and tired carburettors on the early cars are the single biggest running headache. Buy on body and chassis condition first, mechanicals second. Light, slow and short on towing/payload, but enormously capable for their size and dirt cheap to keep going.

Pros

  • Leaf-sprung, crude ride and twitchy on-road

Carburettor wear and rough running
The Aisan/Mikuni carburettor suffers throttle-shaft wear, perished diaphragms, blocked jets and worn needles, giving rough idle, hesitation, flat spots and poor economy. Genuine carb parts are scarce and pricey.
Fix: Carburettor rebuild kit or a Weber DGV conversion (very common on these cars); set float, jets and idle correctly.

Chassis and body rust
Ladder chassis rails, A-arm/cross-member mounts, footwells, sills, rear quarters and the floor all rust, especially on beach-driven or coastal cars. Structural chassis rot can write the vehicle off.

The factory carburettor develops throttle-shaft wear, torn secondary diaphragms, blocked jets and a sticky choke, causing rough idle, hesitation, stalling and heavy fuel use. Parts are getting hard to find.
Fix: Rebuild the carb or fit a Weber 32/36 DGV conversion (the standard fix in the Sierra community).
