highChassis rail and body-mount rust

Look for: Across the whole range the ladder chassis rails, A-arm/cross-member mounts, footwells, sills, rear quarters and tailgates rust - badly on beach and coastal cars - and can be a structural write-off.

If you find it: Thorough underbody and chassis inspection before purchase; professional cut-and-weld repairs. Strongly favour dry-climate, rust-free examples.

mediumBirfield / CV joint wear (no boots)

Look for: The Sierra and early Vitara front axles use birfield joints with no CV boots, so water and grit cause clicking, knocking and eventual joint failure - the inner birfield usually goes first.

If you find it: Replace worn birfields/CVs; keep swivel hub lube fresh to prolong life.

mediumTired carburettors (early cars)

Look for: All carburetted Sierras and the 8-valve Vitara suffer carb wear - throttle-shaft slop, diaphragm failure, blocked jets and choke faults - giving rough running, flat spots and poor economy, with genuine parts now scarce.

If you find it: Carb rebuild, recondition, or a Weber DGV conversion; otherwise choose an EFI variant.

highChassis, door and tailgate rust

Look for: Ladder chassis, body mounts, door bottoms, rear arches and the tailgate corrode, especially on coastal cars - structural chassis rust is a write-off risk.

If you find it: Chassis and body rust inspection pre-purchase; weld/repair as required.

mediumCarburettor faults (8-valve G16A)

Look for: The carburetted 8-valve Vitara runs rich/rough with throttle-shaft wear, diaphragm failure and choke trouble; replacement carbs are scarce and expensive.

If you find it: Rebuild or recondition the carb; EFI cars avoid this entirely so are preferred.

mediumFront swivel hub / birfield wear

Look for: The live front axle swivel hubs leak oil/grease and the birfield (CV) joints wear and click; the Sierra uses no CV boots so dirt/water ingress accelerates wear.

If you find it: Swivel hub reseal/repack and kingpin bearing service; replace worn birfields. A weekend DIY job.

mediumTiming belt service (interference risk)

Look for: The G13BB runs a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule; a snapped belt can damage valves. Many high-age cars have unknown belt history.

If you find it: Replace belt and tensioner on interval; confirm service history before purchase.

1.0L F10A petrol (SJ410 Sierra)

mediumCarburettor wear and rough running

Look for: The Aisan/Mikuni carburettor suffers throttle-shaft wear, perished diaphragms, blocked jets and worn needles, giving rough idle, hesitation, flat spots and poor economy. Genuine carb parts are scarce and pricey.

If you find it: Carburettor rebuild kit or a Weber DGV conversion (very common on these cars); set float, jets and idle correctly.

mediumAge-related driveline and consumables

Look for: Perished bushes, leaking seals, tired leaf springs, worn kingpins and aged wiring are the norm on 40-year-old vehicles.

If you find it: Budget a full consumables refresh; these are simple and cheap to rebuild.

1.3L G13A / G13BA petrol (SJ413 / SJ70 Sierra)

mediumCarburettor faults and flat spots

Look for: The factory carburettor develops throttle-shaft wear, torn secondary diaphragms, blocked jets and a sticky choke, causing rough idle, hesitation, stalling and heavy fuel use. Parts are getting hard to find.

If you find it: Rebuild the carb or fit a Weber 32/36 DGV conversion (the standard fix in the Sierra community).

2.0L H20A V6 (Vitara 5-door)

mediumTiming belt service (interference engine)

Look for: The H20A V6 is belt-driven and interference; a neglected belt can bend valves. Belt access on the V6 makes the job dearer than on the fours.

If you find it: Replace belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump together on interval; confirm history.

mediumCooling system / overheating with age

Look for: Aged radiators, hoses and thermostats let the compact V6 run hot, risking head-gasket trouble if ignored.

If you find it: Refresh radiator, hoses, thermostat and coolant; keep the cooling system healthy.

lowFront swivel hub seal leaks

Look for: The live front axle swivel hubs weep diff oil and grease past tired seals, contaminating the kingpin bearings and birfield and eventually leading to wear and noise.

If you find it: Swivel hub reseal and repack kit with new kingpin bearings - a straightforward DIY job.

From 100k+ km · ~$150-500 DIY

lowWorn suspension, steering and bushes (age)

Look for: Decades-old leaf/coil springs, bushes, shocks, steering joints and wheel bearings wear out, giving wander, clunks and poor handling.

If you find it: Refresh suspension and steering consumables; replace bushes, joints and bearings as a set.

lowModest brakes, payload and towing limits

Look for: These are small, light vehicles with modest brakes and very limited payload and towing capacity - not a fault, but a real limitation owners must respect, especially when loaded or overlanding.

If you find it: Keep loads within rating; maintain brakes well and avoid overloading. Not a defect.
