Overview

Sold in Australia from mid-2018 as the hatch (the ZWE211/MZEA12 chassis codes) in Ascent Sport, SX and ZR grades, with the sedan following in 2019. The E210 sits on Toyota's TNGA-C platform and is one of the most reliable small cars you can buy used: there is no turbo, no dual-clutch and no timing belt to worry about. Two powertrains were offered locally - a 2.0L M20A-FKS Dynamic Force petrol (125kW/200Nm) with a clever Direct Shift CVT that uses a physical launch gear, and a 1.8L 2ZR-FXE petrol-hybrid (around 90kW combined, lifted with the 5th-gen hybrid system at the 2023 facelift) running an e-CVT. A 6-speed manual was available on the petrol Ascent Sport until it was quietly dropped in late 2021. The hybrid is the standout buy - frugal (4.2L/100km), proven Prius-derived tech, and battery repairs are cheap and modular. Watch points are minor by class standards: an early CVT torque-converter recall, occasional EGR and oil-consumption niggles on early 2.0L cars, infotainment freezes, and a cramped rear seat/boot that is the car's only real practical flaw.
