Overview

Launched in Australia in November 2020, the Yaris Cross is Toyota's light/small SUV built on the same TNGA-B (GA-B) platform as the XP210 Yaris hatch and sourced from Japan. It is a monocoque on-road soft-roader sold here in GX, GXL and Urban grades, with a hybrid-only GR Sport added from late 2022. Two powertrains were offered in Australia: a 1.5-litre M15A-FKS naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol (Direct Shift CVT) and a 1.5-litre M15A-FXE petrol-hybrid (planetary e-CVT) using Toyota's fifth-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive with a small lithium-ion drive battery. Both can be had as front-drive or with Toyota's electric on-demand AWD (badged AWD-i / E-Four), which adds a separate rear electric motor rather than a driveshaft - there is no transfer case or Haldex coupling to fail. As demand swung to hybrid, Toyota Australia wound the pure-petrol grades back and the range became effectively hybrid-only by around 2024. Reliability is genuinely strong - this is a Toyota hybrid with a chain-timed Atkinson-cycle engine, no DCT, no conventional belt-and-pulley CVT, no diesel/DPF and no turbo - and What Car?/owner surveys rate it as near-faultless. The real-world caveats are an undersized 12V battery that goes flat on cars used only for short trips, an early hybrid power-loss recall, a tiny 36-litre tank and a class-low 400kg braked tow rating, plus typical small-car road noise. The smart used buy is a serviced hybrid; the petrol is cheaper but slower, thirstier in town and harder to resell.

Pros

Pros
