Look for: Early new-generation Yaris and Yaris Cross hybrids were recalled (announced late December 2020) for a potential loss of drive power while driving. A safety recall, not a wear item - but must be checked on early cars.

Look for: Across the hybrid range the small 12V auxiliary battery can go flat when the car sits for several days or is used only for short trips, leaving it unable to power up the hybrid system. The original battery is widely considered undersized, and some owners have had a larger battery fitted under warranty/goodwill.

If you find it: Drive longer trips periodically, fit a 12V maintainer if parked often, or replace with a higher-capacity battery; have parasitic draw measured if it recurs.

Look for: The small 12V auxiliary battery (which wakes the hybrid system) is widely reported to discharge and fail to 'ready' the car after the vehicle sits for several days or on a diet of very short trips, because the hybrid system does not fully replenish it. Widely discussed by owners; some have received a larger-capacity battery under warranty/goodwill.

If you find it: Drive longer trips, fit a 12V maintainer if parked often, or replace with a higher-capacity battery; have parasitic draw checked if it recurs.

Look for: The Direct Shift CVT is generally reliable and its launch gear reduces belt slip from rest, but like any belt-and-pulley CVT it can wear or judder if the fluid is never changed, and a replacement unit is expensive. Far less troublesome than rival Jatco/Lineartronic units, but fluid history still matters.

If you find it: Insist on CVT fluid-change history (around every 60,000-100,000km); have the unit road-tested for shudder/flare before purchase; budget for a unit only if records are missing.

lowTiny fuel tank and no full-size spare

Look for: The 36-litre tank limits touring range and most grades ship with a tyre-repair kit rather than a spare, which owners flag as a problem for country/outback driving where punctures are likely.

If you find it: Carry a plug/repair kit and pump, plan fuel stops on long trips, or source/fit a space-saver where one will fit; factor this into rural buying.

lowRoad / tyre noise and firm low-speed ride

Look for: Like many light SUVs the Yaris Cross transmits coarse road and tyre noise on Australian surfaces and rides firmly at low speed; some owners also report wind flutter and seal squeak from the top of the rear doors.

If you find it: Quieter tyres and added sound-deadening help; check door seals and adjust/replace if squeaking. Not a fault.

lowBrake regen feel and low-speed brake noise

Look for: Hybrids blend regenerative and friction braking, which can give a slightly grabby or inconsistent low-speed pedal feel, and some cars develop a brake groan/squeal at parking speeds. Almost always behaviour or noise rather than a fault.

If you find it: Anti-squeal shims and clean/lubricated caliper slides for noise; pedal feel is normal hybrid behaviour. Have brakes inspected if performance is affected.

Look for: As with many modern Toyotas the paint can chip easily on the bonnet and front end from stone strikes, particularly on darker colours.

Look for: Like most direct-injection petrols, the M15A can slowly build carbon on the intake valves over high kilometres (no port-injection wash), occasionally causing rough idle or minor misfire. Uncommon and slow on a low-stress Atkinson hybrid.

If you find it: Intake/walnut clean if symptomatic; quality fuel and regular oil changes slow it.
