Transporter T5 inspection checklist

2004-2015 · 15 things to check before you buy, taken from this car's known problems.

All engines

highDSG (DQ250/DQ500) mechatronic faults

Look for: The dual-clutch DSG can develop mechatronic-unit faults - jerky shifts, hesitation, or dropping into neutral while driving - particularly if fluid services are skipped.

If you find it: Service DSG fluid/filter on interval; repair or replace the mechatronic unit; insist on gearbox service records.

mediumDual-mass flywheel rattle / judder

Look for: The dual-mass flywheel wears across manual and DSG vans, giving idle rattle and take-up judder; common on the torquey diesels.

If you find it: Replace DMF and clutch as a set.

From 120k+ km · ~$1500-3000

mediumFront suspension and steering wear

Look for: Lower control-arm bushes, ball joints and track-rod ends wear under the weight of a loaded van, causing clunks and vague steering.

If you find it: Replace worn front-end components; wheel alignment after.

highInjector failure and PD cam-follower / camshaft wear

Look for: The 2.5 PD five is notorious for failing unit injectors and worn cam followers/camshaft that drive them, causing misfires, smoke, power loss and hard starting. Australian owners report major cumulative repair bills.

If you find it: Injector and camshaft/follower replacement by a VW diesel specialist; strict use of PD-spec oil and on-time servicing.

1.9L TDI PD diesel

highCambelt failure if service missed

Look for: The 1.9 PD is belt-driven; a neglected or overdue cambelt can snap and bend valves, destroying the head.

If you find it: Replace cambelt, tensioner and water pump on interval; verify documented belt history before purchase.

From 120k+ km (or 5 yrs) · ~$700-1400 (service) / $4000+ (failure)

2.5L TDI PD diesel (5-cyl)

highWater pump / timing gear failure cracking block

Look for: A failing water pump or worn timing components can lead to overheating and, if ignored, a cracked engine block - a documented 2.5 PD failure mode.

If you find it: Replace water pump with cambelt; keep cooling system fresh; never run hot.

mediumTurbo and dual-mass flywheel wear

Look for: Turbocharger (often VNT) and the dual-mass flywheel wear with age, giving smoke/lost boost or rattling and judder on take-up.

If you find it: Turbo recondition/replace; DMF and clutch replacement as a set.

From 150k+ km · ~$1500-3500

2.0L BiTDI CR twin-turbo diesel

highBalance-shaft / oil-pump module failure (CFCA)

Look for: The CFCA bi-turbo's balance-shaft module drives the oil pump via a hex/chain that wears or whose tensioner fails; when it lets go oil pressure drops instantly and the engine is destroyed - the defining BiTDI failure.

If you find it: Fit the uprated balance-shaft/oil-pump module preventively; monitor oil pressure and condition; full service history is essential.

Often under 150k km · ~$3000-12000

mediumHigh oil consumption

Look for: Some CFCA engines consume oil heavily (worn rings/seals), risking running low and accelerating oil-pump-module wear.

If you find it: Monitor oil level between services; investigate consumption early; avoid examples with documented heavy use of oil.

mediumEGR cooler failure / DPF clogging

Look for: EGR cooler can fail (aluminium debris into the oil reported) and the DPF clogs on short trips, as with the single-turbo 2.0 TDI.

If you find it: EGR cooler/valve replacement; DPF regen/clean; regular highway running.

From 100k+ km · ~$500-2500

2.0L TDI CR diesel

mediumDPF clogging on short trips

Look for: Stop-start urban running prevents the diesel particulate filter from regenerating; it clogs, triggering warning lights, limp mode and the need for a forced/dealer regen or replacement.

If you find it: Regular highway runs to allow regen; forced regen, clean or replace DPF; address any EGR fault feeding soot.

mediumEGR cooler / valve carbon and failure

Look for: The EGR valve and cooler clog with soot or fail, causing rough running, fault codes, poor economy and contributing to DPF problems.

If you find it: EGR clean or replacement; carbon decoke of intake.

mediumDSG mechatronic / dual-mass flywheel issues

Look for: DSG-equipped vans can suffer mechatronic faults (erratic shifts, dropping to neutral) and dual-mass-flywheel rattle/judder.

If you find it: DSG service on interval, mechatronic repair/replacement; DMF and clutch as a set. Verify gearbox service history.

2.0L TSI petrol

mediumOil consumption (EA888 rings / PCV)

Look for: Early EA888 TSI engines are known for high oil consumption from worn piston rings and PCV faults; running low risks engine damage.

If you find it: Monitor oil level; PCV/oil-separator replacement; ring/piston work in severe cases.

From 80k+ km · ~$500-4000

mediumTiming-chain tensioner wear

Look for: The early EA888 timing-chain tensioner can wear and allow the chain to rattle or skip a tooth, risking valve damage.

If you find it: Replace tensioner (uprated part) and chain; investigate any cold-start rattle promptly.

From 100k+ km · ~$1200-2500

lowElectrical gremlins (modules, central locking, sensors)

Look for: Owners report assorted electrical niggles - central locking actuators, window switches, parking sensors, dash warnings and water ingress into connectors.

If you find it: Diagnose with VCDS; replace faulty actuators/sensors; reseal any leaks.

lowSliding-door and rear corrosion / wear (high-use vans)

Look for: Hard-worked commercial T5s show sliding-door roller and track wear, plus surface corrosion around door bottoms and rear arches on coastal examples.

If you find it: Service door rollers/tracks; treat surface rust; favour well-kept, lower-use examples.
