Overview
The T5 ran in two distinct phases in Australia. The pre-facelift 2004-2009 cars used VW's Pumpe Duse (PD) unit-injector diesels - the 1.9L four and the characterful 2.5L five-cylinder - both of which earned a patchy reliability record (the 2.5 PD in particular is widely regarded as an experimental, troublesome engine). The 2009-2010 facelift (often called T5.1/GP) switched to modern 2.0L common-rail diesels with DPFs: a single-turbo 2.0 TDI (62/75/103kW) and the 132kW 2.0 BiTDI twin-turbo, plus a 150kW 2.0 TSI petrol added from around 2011. The common-rail cars drive far better but bring their own headaches - the BiTDI's notorious balance-shaft/oil-pump module failure, DPF/EGR clogging, and DSG (DQ500/DQ250) mechatronic and dual-mass-flywheel issues. A T5 can be a superb, car-like van, but engine and gearbox history matter enormously: buy on records, not on price.

1.9L TDI PD diesel
Pros
- Simplest, cheapest T5 diesel to buy and run
- No DPF or common-rail complexity
- Adequate economy for a big van
- PD injection is mechanically straightforward to a diesel specialist
Cons
- Genuinely underpowered, especially the 62kW, when loaded
- PD injector and cam-follower wear is a known weakness
- Cambelt-driven - missed belt service is catastrophic
- Manual only; tired examples are smoky
Known problems
2.5L TDI PD diesel (5-cyl)
Pros
- Strong, torquey and characterful five-cylinder note
- 128kW version has genuine performance for a van
- 4MOTION available for traction
- Pulls heavy loads with ease when healthy
Cons
- Widely considered the least reliable T5 engine - 'experimental' PD five
- Injector failures and cam-follower/camshaft wear are common and expensive
- Cambelt-driven and known for water-pump/timing-gear failures cracking the block
- Dual-mass flywheel and turbo issues add up; big repair bills documented in AU
Known problems
2.0L TDI CR diesel
Pros
- Far more refined and economical than the old PD engines
- 103kW version (340Nm) is a genuinely good, car-like drive
- Common-rail is materially more reliable than the 2.5 PD
- Modern emissions and noise levels
Cons
- DPF clogs on short urban-only runs (limp mode, forced regens)
- EGR cooler and valve carbon/failure is common
- DSG (DQ500/DQ250) mechatronic and dual-mass-flywheel niggles
- Cambelt-driven; injectors are still a higher-km wear item
Known problems
2.0L BiTDI CR twin-turbo diesel
Pros
- Strong, flexible twin-turbo performance - the quickest T5 diesel
- 400Nm from 1500rpm makes it effortless loaded or towing
- Pairs well with the 7-speed DSG
- Genuinely car-like to drive
Cons
- Notorious balance-shaft/oil-pump module failure that can destroy the engine
- Oil consumption on the CFCA needs close scrutiny
- EGR cooler and DPF issues as per the single-turbo
- Expensive to repair when it goes wrong
Known problems
2.0L TSI petrol
Pros
- Strong, refined performance - the most powerful T5
- No DPF/EGR diesel emissions complexity
- Cheaper to buy than the BiTDI
- Smooth with the DSG
Cons
- Thirsty for a van compared with the diesels
- EA888 TSI engines can consume oil (piston rings/PCV)
- Timing-chain tensioner wear on early EA888 is a known concern
- Rare in AU - most T5s sold here were diesel
