Overview

The T5 ran in two distinct phases in Australia. The pre-facelift 2004-2009 cars used VW's Pumpe Duse (PD) unit-injector diesels - the 1.9L four and the characterful 2.5L five-cylinder - both of which earned a patchy reliability record (the 2.5 PD in particular is widely regarded as an experimental, troublesome engine). The 2009-2010 facelift (often called T5.1/GP) switched to modern 2.0L common-rail diesels with DPFs: a single-turbo 2.0 TDI (62/75/103kW) and the 132kW 2.0 BiTDI twin-turbo, plus a 150kW 2.0 TSI petrol added from around 2011. The common-rail cars drive far better but bring their own headaches - the BiTDI's notorious balance-shaft/oil-pump module failure, DPF/EGR clogging, and DSG (DQ500/DQ250) mechatronic and dual-mass-flywheel issues. A T5 can be a superb, car-like van, but engine and gearbox history matter enormously: buy on records, not on price.

Pros

The CFCA bi-turbo's balance-shaft module drives the oil pump via a hex/chain that wears or whose tensioner fails; when it lets go oil pressure drops instantly and the engine is destroyed - the defining BiTDI failure.
