Known problems7

Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

Medium
AdBlue / DEF sensor faults
AdBlue sensor throws premature codes.
Fix: Sensor replacement. Use quality AdBlue.
From 30-80k km · ~$400-900
Listed for: Isuzu D-Max RG · Mazda BT-50 TF
Medium
DPD/DPF soot loading and frequent regens on short trips
The Diesel Particulate Diffuser won't passively regenerate on short, low-speed suburban driving. Soot builds up, regen cycles become frequent, fuel use climbs and a permanently blocked filter is expensive. Using non-DPF-rated oil clogs it fast. Some owners have reported constant-regen behaviour and warranty disputes where Isuzu cited fuel contamination.
Fix: Give it a 20-30 minute highway run periodically to complete a burn, use only low-SAPS DPF-rated oil, address blockages early. Cleaning/forced regen is far cheaper than filter replacement.
Any (urban use) · ~$300-2500
Listed for: Isuzu MU-X RJ
Medium
EGR valve and intake manifold carbon build-up
Soot and oil vapour clog the EGR valve and inlet manifold, causing check-engine lights, hard starting, power loss and rough idle; the EGR can stick open. A catch-can reduces oil carry-over.
Fix: Intake/EGR clean (aerosol kit ~$100, full clean/replacement up to ~$1500); fit an oil catch-can to slow re-fouling.
From 60k+ km · ~$100-1500
Listed for: Isuzu MU-X RJ
Medium
Transmission overheating when towing heavy
The Aisin auto can run hot dragging a 2.5t+ caravan uphill, with the temperature warning appearing under sustained load from torque-converter slip.
Fix: Fit an auxiliary transmission cooler, use a lower gear on climbs, and keep transmission fluid fresh.
Any · ~$300-900 (aux cooler)
Listed for: Isuzu MU-X RJ
Low
Lane keep over-intervention
Tugs at the wheel on faded road markings.
Fix: Disable via menu/button each drive.
Any · ~$0
Listed for: Isuzu D-Max RG
Low
Front CV joint and wheel-bearing wear
Front CV joints and wheel bearings can wear earlier than expected on 4x4s used off-road or working hard - a click-clack on full lock signals a tired CV; bearings can fail before 50,000km on hard-used examples.
Fix: Inspect/repack bearings at service intervals, check CV boots for splits, replace worn joints with quality parts.
From 50k+ km · ~$300-1200
Listed for: Isuzu MU-X RJ
Low
EGR carbon (early stages)
Isuzu lineage pattern.
Fix: Preventive intake clean.
From 80k+ km · ~$300-500
Listed for: Mazda BT-50 TF
