DPF clogging (short-trip / city use)
If the car rarely does sustained highway running the diesel particulate filter never completes a regen, soot loads up, the warning light comes on and the engine drops into limp mode. A classic city-diesel failure on the 1.6 CRDi i30.
Fix: Forced/active regen via scan tool, or DPF clean; severe cases need DPF replacement. Buy one used for regular highway trips, not stop-start city only.

EGR valve / intake soot build-up
EGR recirculation cakes the valve and intake with soot, causing rough idle, hesitation, lost power and EGR fault codes.
Fix: EGR clean or replacement; intake clean. Highway running and quality fuel reduce build-up.

Unlike the petrol engines, the D4FB diesel is belt-driven; a neglected belt risks an interference-engine failure.

DPF clogging from short trips
The diesel particulate filter needs sustained driving (roughly 20+ minutes at highway speed) to complete a regeneration; mostly-urban, short-trip use lets soot accumulate until the DPF blocks and triggers warnings or limp mode.
Fix: Regular highway runs to allow regen; forced regen or professional DPF clean if blocked; replacement in severe cases.
