Overview

Australia's perennial small-car favourite and a former top seller, the PD-series i30 hatch arrived in 2017 and ran in various forms through the mid-2020s, sold as Go, Active, Elite, SR/N-Line, Premium and the standalone hot-hatch i30 N. The mainstream bread-and-butter car is the 2.0L Nu MPi/GDi petrol (Go/Active) - cheap, simple, naturally aspirated and genuinely reliable, with chain timing and an excellent five-year warranty backing it. A 1.6L CRDi turbo diesel was offered in the early years (roughly 2017-2018) before being quietly dropped as diesel demand in the segment collapsed. The enthusiast's pick is the 1.6L T-GDi turbo (originally SR, later N-Line, 150kW) paired with a slick 7-speed dual-clutch, and at the top sits the genuinely brilliant i30 N with its 2.0L Theta turbo. Each engine has a defining caveat: the 1.6 diesel's DPF/EGR sensitivity to short trips, the dual-clutch's low-speed shudder and clutch-pack wear, and the turbo petrols' direct-injection carbon and oil consumption (plus the well-publicised i30 N high-pressure fuel-pump recall). As a used buy the i30 is one of the safer small cars going, but the engine and gearbox you choose matters - and capped-price-service history is worth chasing.
