Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
Piston-ring defect / engine failure recall (2020-2022)
Piston rings on certain 2020-2022 2.0L engines were out of manufacturing spec, risking abnormal wear, oil burning, stalling and even fire. Kia recalled 9534 Cerato/Seltos in Australia (REC-006395), replacing damaged engines and applying an ECU update to monitor for early failure signs.
Fix: Confirm recall REC-006395 has been completed (engine inspected/replaced + ECU monitoring update); buy with documented recall completion.
Any (affected build) · ~$0 under recall (else engine $6000-9000)
Listed for: Kia Cerato BD
Medium
GDI intake-valve carbon build-up
Direct-injection means fuel no longer washes the back of the intake valves, so carbon accumulates and can cause rough idle, hesitation, misfires and lost economy - a known Hyundai-Kia GDI trait.
Fix: Walnut-blast/clean the intake valves; use top-tier fuel; an oil catch-can reduces re-fouling.
From 80k-120k km · ~$400-900
Listed for: Hyundai i30 PD · Hyundai Tucson TL · Kia Sportage QL
Medium
Oil consumption / engine wear (Nu family)
Like several Hyundai/Kia engines of the era, some 2.0 Nu units use more oil than expected between services - owners have reported needing a litre or two added, with rough idle or noise in worse cases tied to ring/bore wear.
Fix: Check oil regularly between services, keep to the schedule and use the correct grade; document any consumption and address under warranty where eligible.
From 80k+ km · ~$200-1500 (monitoring to top-end work)
Listed for: Hyundai i30 PD
Medium
Engine oil consumption (Nu piston-ring issue)
Some Nu engines suffered heat-treatment errors in piston oil-control rings, leading to high oil consumption, scuffed bores and in bad cases engine damage. The worst-affected batches are 2019-21 builds, but any 2.0 should be checked - oil burn often shows no warning light until the level is critically low.
Fix: Check oil level/condition at purchase and monitor between services; raise any consumption with Hyundai as it may be covered by extended engine warranty/campaign. Keep to service intervals with correct-spec oil.
Any (build-batch dependent) · ~$3000-8000 (engine/short-block if severe)
Listed for: Hyundai Tucson TL
Medium
Oil consumption between services
The Nu family has a documented tendency to consume oil with no visible external leak; owners can find the dipstick 1-2 litres low between services, which is also an early warning sign of the piston-ring issue.
Fix: Check oil level regularly between services; if consumption is heavy, have it assessed under warranty/recall before damage occurs.
From 60k+ km · ~$0-300 (monitoring/top-ups)
Listed for: Kia Cerato BD
Medium
Oil consumption (stuck oil-control rings)
Carbon can stick the low-tension oil-control piston rings on these GDI fours, leading to elevated oil consumption between services - part of the wider Hyundai-Kia engine concern that drove the Australian class action.
Fix: Monitor and top up oil; keep to short oil-change intervals; severe cases need short-block/engine work. Check oil level on inspection and ask for service records.
From 100k+ km · ~$300 (monitoring) to $4000+ (engine work)
Listed for: Kia Sportage QL
Low
Idle shudder / rough running
Some owners report rough or shuddering idle, usually traced to ignition coils/plugs, a dirty throttle body or carbon on GDi cars.
Fix: Plugs/coils, throttle-body and intake clean as needed.
Any · ~$150-600
Listed for: Hyundai Tucson TL
Low
Cold-start timing chain rattle / valve-cover seepage
Higher-km Nu engines can develop a brief cold-start chain rattle and minor valve-cover gasket oil seepage.
Fix: Use correct-grade oil and stick to service intervals; replace valve-cover gasket and inspect chain tensioner if rattle persists.
From 100k+ km · ~$200-900
Listed for: Kia Cerato BD
Low
Ignition coil / spark plug wear
Coils and plugs wear with age, causing misfire and a check-engine light.
Fix: Replace coils and plugs as a set; routine maintenance item.
From 100k+ km · ~$250-600
Listed for: Kia Sportage QL
