Overview

The TL Tucson revived the Tucson name in Australia in August 2015, replacing the ix35, and sold as Active, Active X, Elite and Highlander (a 'Go' base grade replaced Active with the Series II facelift in August 2018). It is a monocoque soft-roader, not a serious off-roader: front-wheel drive on base grades, with an on-demand electronic AWD coupling on the turbo and diesel cars. Three drivetrains were offered locally - a 2.0L 'Nu' petrol (direct-injection GDi early, switched to multi-point MPi with the 2018 Series II), a 1.6L 'Gamma' turbo-petrol mated only to a 7-speed dry dual-clutch, and a 2.0L 'R' common-rail turbo-diesel. Each has a defining caveat: the 7-speed DCT's low-speed shudder/hesitation, the diesel's DPF and EGR appetite for highway running, and Hyundai's broader Nu/Theta engine oil-consumption saga (the affected piston-ring batches were mainly 2019-21 builds, so check the dipstick). Generally well-built with a strong factory warranty, it is a sensible used family SUV - drivetrain choice and service history matter most.

Pros

  • Simplest, cheapest drivetrain - conventional torque-converter auto, no DCT or DPF

Engine oil consumption (Nu piston-ring issue)
Some Nu engines suffered heat-treatment errors in piston oil-control rings, leading to high oil consumption, scuffed bores and in bad cases engine damage. The worst-affected batches are 2019-21 builds, but any 2.0 should be checked - oil burn often shows no warning light until the level is critically low.
Fix: Check oil level/condition at purchase and monitor between services; raise any consumption with Hyundai as it may be covered by extended engine warranty/campaign. Keep to service intervals with correct-spec oil.

GDi intake carbon build-up (2015-2018)
Direct-injection GDi engines don't wash the back of the intake valves with fuel, so carbon accumulates over time causing rough running and mild power/economy loss.
Fix: Walnut-blast or chemical intake-valve clean; quality fuel and occasional highway runs help. MPi (2018+) cars are not affected.

Pros

The dry 7-speed dual-clutch is prone to shuddering, hesitation, jerky low-speed engagement and occasional lurch from a standstill, worst in hot stop-start traffic where the clutches overheat and glaze. Hyundai issued TCU anti-judder software updates; persistent cases need clutch-pack or actuator/mechatronic work.
Fix: Confirm the latest TCU update is applied; test-drive in traffic for shudder. Budget for clutch-pack replacement on a glazed unit; avoid riding the clutch in slow crawl.

DPF clogging (short-trip / urban use)
The diesel particulate filter can only burn off soot once the exhaust reaches regeneration temperature. Mostly-urban, short-trip cars never get hot enough, so the DPF clogs - triggering forced regens, warning lights, limp mode and ultimately a manual clean or replacement.
Fix: Regular highway runs to complete regens; avoid short-trip-only use. Forced/manual regen or DPF clean when clogged; investigate underlying EGR/injector causes.
