Tucson
Overview
The TL Tucson revived the Tucson name in Australia in August 2015, replacing the ix35, and sold as Active, Active X, Elite and Highlander (a 'Go' base grade replaced Active with the Series II facelift in August 2018). It is a monocoque soft-roader, not a serious off-roader: front-wheel drive on base grades, with an on-demand electronic AWD coupling on the turbo and diesel cars. Three drivetrains were offered locally - a 2.0L 'Nu' petrol (direct-injection GDi early, switched to multi-point MPi with the 2018 Series II), a 1.6L 'Gamma' turbo-petrol mated only to a 7-speed dry dual-clutch, and a 2.0L 'R' common-rail turbo-diesel. Each has a defining caveat: the 7-speed DCT's low-speed shudder/hesitation, the diesel's DPF and EGR appetite for highway running, and Hyundai's broader Nu/Theta engine oil-consumption saga (the affected piston-ring batches were mainly 2019-21 builds, so check the dipstick). Generally well-built with a strong factory warranty, it is a sensible used family SUV - drivetrain choice and service history matter most.

2.0L Nu petrol (GDi/MPi)
Pros
- Simplest, cheapest drivetrain - conventional torque-converter auto, no DCT or DPF
- Chain timing, no belt to replace
- MPi (2018+) avoids GDi carbon/injector concerns
- Cheap to buy and run; large parts support
Cons
- Underpowered, especially loaded or with the heavier body
- FWD only - no AWD on this engine
- GDi direct-injection prone to intake carbon over time
- Caught up in Hyundai's Nu oil-consumption issue (mainly later builds)
Known problems
1.6L T-GDi turbo petrol
Pros
- Strong, flexible turbo torque from low rpm
- AWD grip and the quickest petrol of the range
- Chain timing, no belt
- Good economy for the performance
Cons
- Mated only to the 7-speed dry dual-clutch (D7UF1) with documented low-speed shudder/hesitation
- DCT runs hot in stop-start traffic and can hesitate/lurch at crawl
- Direct-injection carbon over time like the GDi
- More complex and costlier to repair than the 2.0 MPi
Known problems
2.0L CRDi turbo diesel
Pros
- Strong 400Nm torque - best for towing and highway touring
- Best fuel economy of the range
- Conventional torque-converter auto (6-speed, 8-speed from 2018 Series II) - no DCT
- Chain timing, no belt; AWD traction
Cons
- DPF clogs on short urban-only trips; needs regular highway running to regenerate
- EGR and intake soot build-up over time
- Subject to a fuel-ECU upgrade recall affecting EGR/fuel-system behaviour
- Diesel servicing costs more than the petrols
