Everything our guides list for the variants with this engine: the engine itself plus the gearbox and ancillaries it's paired with. Each shows which cars it's listed for.

High
7-speed dry DCT loss-of-drive (recall) and clutch shudder/overheat
The dry 7-speed dual-clutch can shudder and hesitate from rest and overheat in heavy traffic; certain 2020-2022 Konas were recalled for a fault that could cause a complete loss of drive, a safety risk. Clutch packs and mechatronic faults are the main long-term DCT cost.
Fix: Confirm the DCT recall has been completed; have the clutch adaptation and mechatronic checked; budget for a clutch pack at higher km. Test thoroughly in stop-start traffic for shudder/overheat warnings before buying.
Any (recall); 60k+ km (clutch wear) · Recall (free) / $1500-4000 clutch pack / $5000+ unit
Listed for: Hyundai Kona OS
High
7-speed dry DCT shudder / hesitation
The dry 7-speed dual-clutch is prone to shuddering, hesitation, jerky low-speed engagement and occasional lurch from a standstill, worst in hot stop-start traffic where the clutches overheat and glaze. Hyundai issued TCU anti-judder software updates; persistent cases need clutch-pack or actuator/mechatronic work.
Fix: Confirm the latest TCU update is applied; test-drive in traffic for shudder. Budget for clutch-pack replacement on a glazed unit; avoid riding the clutch in slow crawl.
Any (worse in traffic/heat) · ~$300 (software) to $2500-5000 (clutch pack/mechatronic)
Listed for: Hyundai Tucson TL
Medium
Intake-valve carbon build-up (turbo GDi)
As a turbocharged direct-injection engine it is especially prone to intake-valve carbon, giving rough running and lost performance.
Fix: Walnut-blast/chemical clean; catch-can, quality fuel and frequent oil changes help.
From 80k+ km · ~$300-800
Listed for: Hyundai i30 GD · Hyundai Kona OS · Hyundai Tucson TL · Kia Cerato BD
Medium
DCT low-speed shudder / clutch wear (7DCT cars)
The dual-clutch auto can shudder, flare or hesitate pulling away from rest, and clutch packs can wear; Hyundai's DCT is generally more durable than VW's DSG but replacement clutch packs are not unheard of.
Fix: Software/clutch relearn first; clutch-pack or mechatronic repair if worn. Manual SRs avoid this entirely.
From 60k+ km · ~$1500-3500
Listed for: Hyundai i30 GD
Medium
7-speed dual-clutch (DCT) low-speed shudder / jerk
The dry 7-speed dual-clutch can shudder, hesitate or jerk when taking off and in stop-start traffic; software recalibration helps many cars, but worn clutch packs eventually need replacement, and the unit can heat-soak in prolonged crawling.
Fix: Apply latest TCU/clutch software updates first; clutch-pack replacement if worn. Test drive in traffic before buying and seek service history.
From 40k-100k km · ~$500-3500 (software to clutch pack)
Listed for: Hyundai i30 PD
Medium
Turbo and direct-injection ancillaries at higher km
Turbocharger, high-pressure fuel pump and injectors are wear items on the small forced-induction GDi engine; oil-change neglect accelerates turbo wear.
Fix: Strict oil-change discipline with correct-spec oil; address injector/HPFP or turbo faults via a specialist as they arise.
From 120k+ km · ~$500-2500
Listed for: Hyundai Tucson TL
Medium
Dual-clutch (DCT) low-speed hesitation / judder and failure
The 7-speed dry dual-clutch can feel jerky, hesitant or shudder when crawling, hill-starting or parking; worn clutch packs or a faulty mechatronic/actuator can progress to limp mode or failure.
Fix: Apply Kia software/clutch-relearn updates first; replace clutch pack or actuator if shudder/slip persists. Test-drive extensively in stop-start traffic before buying.
From 60k+ km · ~$1500-4500 (clutch pack) / more for mechatronic
Listed for: Kia Cerato BD
Medium
Turbo oil feed / seal and oil consumption
Gamma turbo engines can consume oil and, if oil quality/level is neglected, suffer restricted turbo oil feed or internal turbo seal leaks leading to premature turbo wear.
Fix: Use correct-grade oil, change on schedule, let the turbo idle-cool after hard runs; monitor oil level and address consumption early.
From 120k+ km · ~$300 (monitoring) - $2500 (turbo)
Listed for: Kia Cerato BD
Low
Intake valve carbon build-up (T-GDi)
Direct injection leaves no fuel washing the intake valves, so carbon accumulates over time, causing slight roughness or power loss.
Fix: Walnut-blast/intake clean if symptomatic; regular oil changes and a catch-can help slow it.
From 100k+ km · ~$400-900
Listed for: Hyundai i30 PD
Low
Oil consumption on some examples
Some turbo-petrol examples use a little oil between services; left unchecked, low oil accelerates turbo and engine wear.
Fix: Check oil between services; keep levels correct and to schedule.
From 80k+ km · ~$100-500 (monitoring)
Listed for: Hyundai i30 PD
Low
AWD multi-plate coupling / fluid wear
The on-demand AWD uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch coupling to the rear axle; neglected coupling fluid or a worn coupling can cause shudder on tight turns or reduced rear drive.
Fix: Service the coupling/rear-drive fluid per schedule; diagnose any tight-turn shudder; check for fault codes on the AWD system.
From 100k+ km · ~$300-1500
Listed for: Hyundai Kona OS
