Overview

The GD was the i30 that made Hyundai a genuine mainstream small-car player in Australia, locally tuned by Hyundai's Australian ride-and-handling team and sold in huge numbers as Active, Active X, Elite, Premium and the sporty SR. Sold as a 5-door hatch and a Tourer wagon, all front-wheel drive. The bread-and-butter engine is the 1.8L Nu MPi petrol - simple, port-injected and the safest used buy. Above it sat the 2.0L Nu GDi (direct injection, SR-flavoured) and below it the 1.6L Gamma GDi. A 1.6L CRDi turbo-diesel (the well-travelled D4FB) suited high-km commuters but brings the usual small-diesel DPF/EGR caveats on short city trips. The Series II facelift (mid-2015) added the genuine hot-hatch 1.6L T-GDi turbo SR with 150kW. Generally a reliable, cheap-to-run used car with a strong dealer network and (originally) a 5-year warranty; the things to watch are GDi carbon/oil-consumption on the direct-injection petrols, DPF clogging on city-bound diesels, and the broader Hyundai/Kia GDi engine class-action context - so always check the VIN against outstanding recalls.

Like all direct-injection engines, the Gamma GDi sprays fuel straight into the cylinder so detergents never wash the back of the intake valves; carbon accumulates, causing rough idle, hesitation and misfires.
Fix: Walnut-blast or chemical intake clean; quality fuel and regular oil changes slow it. A catch-can helps.

If the car rarely does sustained highway running the diesel particulate filter never completes a regen, soot loads up, the warning light comes on and the engine drops into limp mode. A classic city-diesel failure on the 1.6 CRDi i30.
