Tucson
Overview
The fourth-generation Tucson (NX4) launched in Australia in early 2021 with its bold 'Parametric Jewel' grille and a much bigger, more upmarket cabin, sold across Tucson, Elite and Highlander grades (plus the N Line styling pack). It is a monocoque on-road soft-roader, mechanically twinned with the Kia Sportage NQ5. The Australian engine line-up evolved: at launch you could buy the SmartStream 2.0 'Nu' naturally aspirated petrol (FWD, 6-speed torque-converter auto), the SmartStream 1.6 T-GDi 'Gamma' turbo petrol (7-speed wet dual-clutch, FWD or AWD) and the 2.0 'R-series' CRDi turbo-diesel (8-speed torque-converter auto, AWD only, with multi-terrain Snow/Mud/Sand modes). The diesel was dropped for MY25, and a 1.6 turbo-petrol hybrid (1.6 T-GDi + electric motor, 6-speed torque-converter auto, FWD or AWD) arrived from mid-2024. The single biggest used-buyer caveat is the 7-speed wet DCT behind the 1.6 turbo: it is widely reported for low-speed shudder, hesitation and lurchy take-up, and Hyundai/Kia DCTs have a track record of clutch and mechatronic problems. The 2.0 petrol auto and the hybrid's conventional 6-speed auto are the calmer, lower-risk transmissions. All engines are direct/turbo-charged GDi-family units (the 2.0 Nu is multi-point/GDi depending on build) so carbon and the wider Hyundai GDi oil-consumption reputation are worth checking, and the diesel brings the usual DPF/EGR short-trip concerns. NX4 was also caught up in Hyundai's ABS-module engine-fire recall (carryover risk on early build) and an NX4-specific Forward Collision-Avoidance phantom-braking recall.

2.0L SmartStream petrol (2.0 GDi/MPi)
Pros
- Conventional 6-speed torque-converter auto - avoids the troublesome DCT entirely
- Simplest, lowest-risk NX4 powertrain - no turbo, no DPF
- Timing chain, no belt to replace
- Cheapest Tucson to buy and run; FWD-only keeps it simple
- 5-year unlimited-km Hyundai warranty on cars sold new
Cons
- Noticeably underpowered in a big body, especially loaded or on hills
- FWD only - no AWD option on the 2.0
- Lower 1600kg braked tow rating than the turbo/diesel
- Direct-injection carbon possible at high km on GDi builds
Known problems
1.6L T-GDi turbo petrol (7-speed DCT)
Pros
- Strong, flexible turbo torque from low rpm - the pick for performance
- Available with AWD and multi-terrain modes
- Timing chain, no belt; quick and frugal when cruising
- Highest braked tow rating of the petrols (1900kg)
Cons
- 7-speed wet DCT is widely criticised for low-speed shudder, hesitation and lurch
- DCT clutch/mechatronic repairs are expensive out of warranty
- Direct-injection carbon possible at high km
- Jerky stop-start and crawl behaviour annoys many owners in traffic
Known problems
2.0L CRDi turbo-diesel (8-speed auto, AWD)
Pros
- Strong 416Nm torque - effortless touring and the best for towing/loads
- Conventional 8-speed torque-converter auto, not the DCT
- AWD with multi-terrain modes as standard; lowest highway fuel use
- Timing chain, no belt; long range from a tank
Cons
- DPF/EGR clogging on short urban trips is the classic diesel risk
- Discontinued after MY24 - thinner dealer diesel focus going forward
- Diesel injector and turbo repairs are expensive
- AWD-only and heaviest variant - worst around town if short-tripped
Known problems
1.6L T-GDi Hybrid (6-speed auto)
Pros
- Conventional 6-speed torque-converter auto, NOT the DCT - much smoother in traffic
- Strong 172kW/367Nm combined system; best fuel economy in the range
- Available FWD or AWD; arrived mid-2024 as the new flagship powertrain
- Newest, most refined Tucson drivetrain with the longest remaining warranty
Cons
- Newest variant - limited long-term reliability data and higher used prices
- Hybrid drive-battery and inverter repairs are expensive out of warranty
- Still a direct-injection turbo underneath (carbon/oil monitoring applies)
- Heavier than the 2.0 petrol; AWD adds further weight
