Overview

The fourth-generation Tucson (NX4) launched in Australia in early 2021 with its bold 'Parametric Jewel' grille and a much bigger, more upmarket cabin, sold across Tucson, Elite and Highlander grades (plus the N Line styling pack). It is a monocoque on-road soft-roader, mechanically twinned with the Kia Sportage NQ5. The Australian engine line-up evolved: at launch you could buy the SmartStream 2.0 'Nu' naturally aspirated petrol (FWD, 6-speed torque-converter auto), the SmartStream 1.6 T-GDi 'Gamma' turbo petrol (7-speed wet dual-clutch, FWD or AWD) and the 2.0 'R-series' CRDi turbo-diesel (8-speed torque-converter auto, AWD only, with multi-terrain Snow/Mud/Sand modes). The diesel was dropped for MY25, and a 1.6 turbo-petrol hybrid (1.6 T-GDi + electric motor, 6-speed torque-converter auto, FWD or AWD) arrived from mid-2024. The single biggest used-buyer caveat is the 7-speed wet DCT behind the 1.6 turbo: it is widely reported for low-speed shudder, hesitation and lurchy take-up, and Hyundai/Kia DCTs have a track record of clutch and mechatronic problems. The 2.0 petrol auto and the hybrid's conventional 6-speed auto are the calmer, lower-risk transmissions. All engines are direct/turbo-charged GDi-family units (the 2.0 Nu is multi-point/GDi depending on build) so carbon and the wider Hyundai GDi oil-consumption reputation are worth checking, and the diesel brings the usual DPF/EGR short-trip concerns. NX4 was also caught up in Hyundai's ABS-module engine-fire recall (carryover risk on early build) and an NX4-specific Forward Collision-Avoidance phantom-braking recall.

The wet 7-speed DCT is the NX4's signature complaint: shudder or judder pulling away, hesitation then a sudden lurch in stop-go traffic, double-bumping and delayed engagement, sometimes with a metallic clunk between 1st and 2nd. Some dealers dismiss it as 'characteristic'; in worse cases the clutch pack or mechatronic unit fails.
Fix: Apply the latest TCU/DCT software updates; have clutch take-up and engagement logs checked; budget for clutch-pack or mechatronic repair on neglected/out-of-warranty cars. Test-drive extensively in traffic before buying.
