Overview

The QL Sportage (launched here late 2015 as a MY16, facelifted in 2018) is a soft-roader monocoque crossover, not a true off-roader, and was Kia's volume mid-size SUV alongside the related Hyundai Tucson. The Australian range was Si, Si Premium, SLi, SL and the top Platinum/GT-Line. Three engines were sold locally: a 2.0L Nu GDI petrol (front-drive only, Si/SLi), a 2.4L Theta II GDI petrol (AWD, Platinum), and the strong 2.0L R-series CRDi turbo-diesel (AWD), all with a conventional 6-speed automatic - Australia did NOT get the European 1.6 T-GDi/DCT or 1.7 diesel. It backs the long Kia 7-year warranty and drives well, but it carries the Hyundai-Kia GDI carbon/oil-consumption tendency, the usual diesel DPF/EGR soot issues on short trips, and was caught up in the big Australian HECU (ABS module) fire-risk recall covering 2016-2021 cars. A tidy, well-serviced example with the recall done is a sensible used buy; the diesel is the pick for towing and economy if it has clean service history.

Theta II connecting-rod bearing wear
The Theta II 2.4 GDI family is at the centre of the global Hyundai-Kia engine saga - manufacturing debris and oil-flow issues can wear the connecting-rod bearings, producing a deep knock and possible seizure (and overseas, fires). Australian exposure on the QL is lower than the US recall fleet, but the engine family and the local class action make history and noise checks essential.
Fix: Listen for bottom-end knock on a cold and hot start; verify oil-consumption and service history; check the Australian Kia engine class action / any applicable campaigns. A knocking engine needs replacement.
