Overview
The wagon version of the PX/PX II Ranger - a genuine ladder-frame seven-seat 4WD sold as Ambiente, Trend and Titanium. Originally launched with the 3.2L five-cylinder Duratorq turbo diesel and a 6-speed auto; the 2018 UA II update added a 2.0L bi-turbo four with a 10-speed auto. Higher grades use a clever full-time Torque-on-Demand 4WD with low range and a rear locker. Capable, comfortable and great value used - just buy on service history given the diesel emissions hardware and a couple of known driveline faults.

Pros
- Characterful, torquey 5-cylinder with a great noise
- Proven Ranger driveline, big aftermarket
- Strong tow vehicle (3000kg)
- Simpler than the later 2.0 bi-turbo
Cons
- DPF dislikes short trips
- EGR cooler and oil pump are known weak points
- Injectors sensitive to fuel contamination
- Only 6-speed vs the later 10-speed
Known problems
high
Oil pump / oil pump gear concerns
The 3.2 is known for oil pump issues that can lead to low oil pressure and, if ignored, serious engine damage.
Fix: Maintain strict oil changes; investigate any oil-pressure warning immediately; preventive oil pump replacement on high-km units.
medium
EGR cooler failure
The EGR cooler can crack/clog, causing coolant loss, rough running and limp mode.
Fix: EGR cooler replacement; clean intake.
medium
Injector damage from contaminated fuel & split intercooler hoses
Injectors are sensitive to water/dirt in fuel, and the intercooler hoses can split, causing boost loss and limp mode.
Fix: Quality fuel + secondary filter; replace split hoses with upgraded silicone.
2.0L bi-turbo diesel
Engine
2.0L common-rail bi-turbo diesel I4 (DPF), 10-speed auto
Config
I4 bi-turbo
Displacement
1996cc
Power
157kW @ 3750rpm
Torque
500Nm @ 1750-2000rpm
Drivetrain
Part-time / full-time 4WD (by grade)
Economy
7-7.5 L/100km combined
Tow (braked)
3100kg
Tow (unbraked)
750kg
Transmission
10AT
Timing chain / belt / gear
Chain-driven cam, plus a wet 'belt-in-oil' oil-pump drive (scheduled replacement)
Pros
- More torque and notably better economy than the 3.2
- Smooth 10-speed auto, strong real-world performance
- Quieter and more refined
- 3100kg tow
Cons
- Wet 'belt-in-oil' oil-pump belt is a scheduled service item
- Bi-turbo + DPF/EGR adds complexity and failure points
- 10-speed auto needs correct fluid servicing
- Short-trip use punishes the emissions system
Known problems
medium
EGR / DPF / turbo issues from short trips
The 2.0 bi-turbo is sensitive to short trips and poor servicing - EGR clogging, DPF soot loading and turbo stress are the recurring themes, the bi-turbo arrangement adding risk if neglected.
Fix: Regular highway runs; quality oil/fuel; address faults early before turbo damage.
medium
Wet oil-pump belt ('belt-in-oil')
The oil-pump drive belt runs in oil and degrades over time; debris from a worn belt can block the pickup - it must be replaced on schedule.
Fix: Replace the wet belt on interval with correct-spec oil; confirm history.
low
AdBlue system faults
Where fitted, the AdBlue/SCR system can have injector, heater or level-sensor calibration faults.
Fix: Diagnose and repair the specific SCR component; keep AdBlue topped with quality fluid.
Common problems (all variants)
high
Automatic transmission fluid-pump gear fault (2017-2019)
Ranger/Everest built 2017-2019 are affected by a transmission fluid-pump gear fault that can cause loss of hydraulic pressure and drive - a known issue subject to Ford action.
Fix: Check for the relevant Ford service action/recall; transmission repair if affected.
medium
6-speed auto valve body
The 6-speed auto (3.2) can develop valve-body faults causing harsh or erratic shifts.
Fix: Valve body rebuild/replacement; regular fluid service helps.
low
Coolant hose / cooling system age
Hoses and cooling components age and can leak, especially on hard-worked tow vehicles.
Fix: Refresh cooling system consumables preventively.
low
Interior rattles / trim
Some interior trim rattles and squeaks develop over time and corrugations.
Fix: Re-clip/foam trim; mostly cosmetic.
