Overview
The 80 Series is the LandCruiser that turned the model into a serious touring icon - coil-sprung live axles front and rear, full-time 4WD with a centre diff (factory front and rear diff locks on later GXL/VX), and a body-on-frame chassis that the off-road and remote-touring community still treasures decades on. Sold in Australia as RV, Standard, GXL and VX. Engine choice defines the truck: the 1HZ 4.2 naturally aspirated diesel is the indestructible-but-slow workhorse, the 1HD-T 4.2 turbo diesel (1990-1995) brought real torque but is dogged by factory big-end bearing clearance and head/head-gasket issues, and the 1HD-FT 24-valve turbo diesel (1995-1998) refined it. Petrol buyers got the simple 3F-E 4.0 (1990-1992) then the strong twin-cam 1FZ-FE 4.5 (1992-1998), which is thirsty and prone to head-gasket trouble if overheated. Across the board the 80 is let down by age now - chassis cracking near the steering box, swivel-hub and birfield wear, cooling-system neglect and rust on coastal trucks are the universal checks. Buy on condition and service history, not on the badge.

4.2L 1HZ naturally aspirated diesel
Pros
- Mechanically simple indirect-injection diesel - no electronics, easy to fix
- Gear-driven timing, no belt or chain to fail
- Legendary for outback longevity - 400,000km+ with basic care
- Most reliable 80 Series engine; the safe touring choice
- Responds well to a quality aftermarket turbo kit
Cons
- Genuinely slow - struggles loaded, towing or up long climbs
- Noisy and agricultural compared to later common-rail diesels
- Aftermarket turbos done badly will crack the head from heat
- Sluggish on hills means high revs and more wear

4.2L 1HD-T turbo diesel
Pros
- Strong low-down torque - far more capable loaded/towing than the 1HZ
- Gear-driven timing like the 1HZ, no belt to fail
- Factory turbo direct-injection - the enthusiast's pick of the early diesels
- Sought-after engine that holds value
Cons
- Factory big-end bearing clearance is marginal - bottom-end failure risk
- Head and head-gasket issues, especially if run hot or hard
- Many have been worked hard towing or off-road
- Repairs are costly relative to the simpler 1HZ

4.2L 1HD-FT turbo diesel
Pros
- 24-valve refinement and more power/torque than the 1HD-T
- Gear-driven timing - no belt to snap
- The most desirable 80 Series diesel; strong resale
- Capable tow and touring engine that responds well to mild tuning

- Still shares head-gasket and head-cracking risk if overheated
- Big-end concerns reduced versus 1HD-T but bottom-end still needs care
- Only on the final 1995-1998 trucks - all now high km
- Dearer to buy than the 1HZ or petrol

4.5L 1FZ-FE petrol
Pros
- Smooth, strong twin-cam six - the best-driving 80 Series engine
- Cheaper to buy than the diesels because petrol scares buyers off
- Chain-driven timing - no belt service
- Takes LPG well; many are dual-fuel
Cons
- Very thirsty - 16-20 L/100km and poor touring range on petrol
- Known head-gasket weakness, especially after any overheat
- Can run rough at higher speed from ignition/sensor faults
- Weaker resale than the diesels

Pros
- Old-school OHV six - dead reliable, simple and easy to work on
- Cheapest way into an early 80 Series
- Relatively impervious to neglect with basic maintenance
- Takes LPG well
Cons
- Underpowered and slow, especially loaded or towing
- As thirsty as the 1FZ but with less performance
- Only on the earliest 1990-1992 trucks - all very high km
- Superseded by the much stronger 1FZ-FE in late 1992
