The 80 Series is the LandCruiser that turned the model into a serious touring icon - coil-sprung live axles front and rear, full-time 4WD with a centre diff (factory front and rear diff locks on later GXL/VX), and a body-on-frame chassis that the off-road and remote-touring community still treasures decades on. Sold in Australia as RV, Standard, GXL and VX. Engine choice defines the truck: the 1HZ 4.2 naturally aspirated diesel is the indestructible-but-slow workhorse, the 1HD-T 4.2 turbo diesel (1990-1995) brought real torque but is dogged by factory big-end bearing clearance and head/head-gasket issues, and the 1HD-FT 24-valve turbo diesel (1995-1998) refined it. Petrol buyers got the simple 3F-E 4.0 (1990-1992) then the strong twin-cam 1FZ-FE 4.5 (1992-1998), which is thirsty and prone to head-gasket trouble if overheated.
